Traditionally, each agency or professional responding to child abuse had a different role in the investigation and intervention process. Sometimes, their efforts to fulfill these roles resulted in multiple interviews of the victim and in re-traumatizing the victim they are seeking to assist. There was no mechanism for coordinating these services.
The Child Advocacy Center is a safe, welcoming and child friendly place where all of the professionals involved in the abuse system come to the child, not the other way around. This prevents the potential re-victimization of the child by requiring the child to travel to many different locations to be interviewed by many different adult “strangers.” The professionals involved are specialists in what they do, and they work together as a team, coordinated by the CAC staff, to keep the process simple and effective.
